Volunteer With Southern Quacker
Get your boots muddy for Louisiana’s wood ducks.
Southern Quacker Wildlife Conservation is run by volunteers. Everything we do, from building nest boxes to paddling the Pearl River WMA to check on hens and ducklings, happens because people like you show up.
Ways to help
Box building days: Cut, assemble, and paint cypress nest boxes. No experience needed; we’ll show you how.
Installation and cleanout: Help mount boxes and predator guards, then come back after the season to clean out old nesting material, add fresh cedar shavings, and repair boxes. Some trips go by boat in the Pearl River WMA.
Nest monitoring and data: Check boxes during nesting season and record what you find: eggs, hatched eggs, and which species used the box (wood ducks and black-bellied whistling ducks).
Outreach and events: Help at our educational display at Cajun Encounters, school visits, and community events.
Behind the scenes: Photography, social media, writing, and grant help.
Who can volunteer
Adults, families, scout troops, school groups, and college students are all welcome. Students from LSU and other universities can earn field experience. Volunteers under 18 need a parent or guardian along on field days.
What to expect
Field days usually run a few hours on weekend mornings. We provide tools and supplies; you bring water, sunscreen, bug spray, and clothes that can get dirty. Boat trips follow safety rules, and life jackets are required.
